Teton River Classical Academy

Establishing a tuition-free, public, K-12 charter school

Applying to become a Hillsdale member school founded on American Classical Education.

A small group of citizens in our community are seeking to launch a new school – the first public charter school in Madison County and surrounding areas. With this exciting new prospect, we would like the community to know of our mission and purpose – WHY we are committed to opening this school and WHAT unique features it will offer.

Black Right Arrow

The purpose of classical education is to build children into adults capable of sustaining the great American experiment of self-governance. Teton River Classical Academy will focus on teaching core values to this end.

To learn more about these values, give this podcast a listen from our very own community founding group member, Jim Smith and Steve Lambert.

Mr. Lambert is the Chief Executive Officer for American Classical Schools of Idaho (ACSI) and plays a major role in making TRCA a reality.

Our Mission

To train the minds and improve the hearts of students through a classical, content-rich curriculum that emphasizes virtuous living, traditional learning, and civic responsibility.

Our Vision

To form future citizens who uphold the ideals of our county’s founding and promote the continuation of our American experiment through a classical, great-books curriculum designed to engage the student in the highest matters and the deepest questions of truth, justice, virtue and beauty.

Why?

We believe choice and competition are American ideals and some of the great strengths of our nation. School choice expands the opportunities parents can take advantage of for their children. Charter schools are tuition-free public schools open to all Idaho students.

What?

We aim to open an American classical school. This model of K-12 education is both traditional and comprehensive. An American classical education is: (1) grounded in human nature—nurturing children’s natural curiosity and sense of wonder, (2) rich in content—providing a true liberal arts and science education, (3) concerned with moral formation—cultivating a foundation built on habituating good character, and (4) thoughtfully patriotic—encouraging civic virtue and growing future citizens.

Teton River Classical Academy is applying to partner with Hillsdale College and American Classical Schools of Idaho (ACSI) in bringing a classical education K-12 program to Eastern Idaho families.

What are the main hallmarks of classical education sponsored by Hillsdale and ACSI?

“Classical education is a model of K-12 instruction that is rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, offers a firm grounding in civic virtue, and cultivates moral character:

    • It emphasizes the centrality of the Western tradition in the study of history, literature, philosophy, and the fine arts.
    • It features a rich and recurring examination of the American literary, moral, philosophical, political, and historical traditions to equip students for citizenship.
    • Its curriculum is balanced and strong across the four core disciplines of math, science, literature, and history, with explicit phonics instruction leading to reading fluency and explicit grammar instruction leading to language mastery.
    • Well-educated and articulate teachers are central to the classroom, in contrast to conventional “student-centered learning” models.
    • The school culture demands moral virtue, decorum, respect, discipline, and studiousness among the students and faculty—and simultaneously produces a spirit of wonder and a desire to know that which is good, true, and beautiful.”
